Homely Blessings Presents

Some recipes are simply made, and then there are those that choose you. For Zanel, shortbread was always the latter. Long before it became a business, before the orders and the packaging and the joyful hum of a kitchen in full production, shortbread was a quiet, personal ritual — baked for home, shared with family, gifted to friends, and cherished without fanfare.
From as early as 2004, Zanel's shortbread found its way onto home tables and into the hands of loved ones. It was never meant to be anything more than that. And yet, the best things rarely stay contained.
The Journey...
2004
The First Batch
Zanel begins baking her shortbread recipe — quietly, patiently, lovingly — for home treats and the people she holds dear.
No ambition beyond a warm kitchen and a generous heart.

An Unexpected Request
A church in Durbanville reaches out with a request: something homemade to give as gifts to their staff. They ask Zanel to propose five options. Knowing how demanding shortbread is — its exacting sequence of mixing, baking, cooling, and cutting — Zanel places it last on the list, almost as an afterthought.

2,500 Fingers
The church chooses shortbread. Not just a small quantity — 2,500 fingers, neatly packaged, to be placed in the hands of people who had no idea what was coming. It was an enormous undertaking, and Zanel rose to the occasion amidst "rediculous" loadshedding schedules.

The Orders Begin
The recipients of those gifts want to know: can they order more? The answer, it turns out, was already written into everything Zanel had been quietly perfecting for nearly two decades. She begins baking on order and never looks back. Homely Blessings is established as a business, and with it comes a new chapter.

The House of Shortbread
On the advice of trusted mentors, Zanel's shortbread is launched as its own distinct brand within Homely Blessings. The name chosen: The House of Shortbread. Nine variations are developed, some available year-round, others arriving only with the seasons — because the best things are worth waiting for.

It takes a particular kind of dedication to produce shortbread at scale. Unlike many baked goods, shortbread is unforgiving. The mixing must be precise, the baking exact, the cooling unhurried, and the cutting deliberate. There are no shortcuts in making something this good. Zanel understood this, which is why she placed it last. And yet — the last became first.
Three thousand fingers later, the phones began to ring. People who had received those carefully wrapped gifts wanted more. They wanted to know her name. They wanted to know how to find her. And slowly, gloriously, The House of Shortbread was born.

What makes The House of Shortbread extraordinary is not just the recipe — it is the two decades of care poured into it, the obedience to a calling that was never planned, and the belief that something made with true dedication will always find the people it was meant for.
This is not just a product. It is a blessing — homely, honest, and made to be shared.
Every finger of House of Shortbread shortbread is made exactly as it should be — with ingredients you can trust and nothing you should fear. No shortcuts. No substitutes. No compromise.

We use only traditional stone ground flour — milled slowly to preserve the grain's natural character and depth of flavour.

Not margarine, not a blend — real, full-fat butter. It is the soul of great shortbread and we will never replace it.

Every ingredient is chosen with intention. Quality is not negotiable — because shortbread has nowhere to hide.

No artificial flavours. No colourants. No preservatives. Absolutely MSG free. What you taste is exactly what was baked.
Homely Blessings is dedicated to spreading blessings from home to home by offering carefully curated products that delight and inspire.
